Lemon Scented Gum Gin Harvest 2021, edition three in our Harvest Vintage series, which aims to highlight local producers and champion the generosity of flavour and diversity of Australia’s flora. This is an intensely juniper-forward, powerful gin, for lovers of our Bone Dry Gin. It’s audacious in its lemony-ness, a drink for the fanatics, not the faint hearted.
We searched for something delicious for this year’s Harvest Gin, something a little left of kilter. When Cyan and Martin Von Gija of Victoria’s Bunyip Hollow sent Archie HQ a package of 20 Australian ingredients they were “growing for fun”, we knew it had to be the lemon-scented gum — we’d never come across anything like it. Cyan did have to grow a little bit more to take what he could supply from “for fun” volumes to “for an Archie Rose gin” volumes. But as soon as we could see the bushels of leaves we knew we were away.
Unlike other botanicals used in the series, the lemon-scented gum leaves were distilled fresh - not dried as most botanicals are - so as to not lose some of the soul and complexity often subdued in the drying process. This made it tricky to transport to the distillery but the results were worth it. As nostalgic and refreshing as a lemonade icy pole, this year’s Harvest Gin offers notes of lime sherbert, apple blossom and pine, underpinned by mango and eucalyptus lollies, with emerald green finger lime, juniper, coriander seed and orris root rounding things out.
